Quikwriting 1.0 for the PocketPC (Windows CE Version 3.0) Release!
Quikwriting is by Ken Perlin; the port to the PocketPC platform was by Lisa Mackie.
Installation
- Download the zip file for your processor. If you do not know which processor you have, see the FAQ below.
- Unzip the downloaded file which will be called either arm.zip, sh3.zip, or mips.zip corresponding to your processor. You should have a file called quik.PROCESSOR_300.CAB where PROCESSOR is the name of the processor you are using. N.B. Do *NOT* unzip the CAB file even if it has the appearance of a zip file.
- If you use the ActiveSync partnership mode, copy the CAB file to your documents directory and sync. If you do not want to use the partnership to synchronize your files, copy the CAB file to the /Windows/Start Menu directory on your device. You can copy directly to the device from "My Computer"->Mobile Device->My Pocket PC->Windows->Start Menu.
- From either the "My Documents" directory or the start menu you should now see the CAB file--click on it to install. The CAB file will disappear after installation is complete.
- To begin using Quikwriting, open an application such as Notes and choose Quikwriting as your input method from the menu at the bottom right of your device screen.

If you already have Quikwriting installed on your device and have been running it you will probably run into an error when installing the new version. You will get a message saying that Quikwriting is already running and cannot be overwritten. You must do a soft reset on your device. Most devices have a button either on the back or on the bottom which you push with your stylus. The reset will NOT erase your data--it will stop the Quikwriting process so that you can install the new version.Version 0.85
Help files
Help files are included with the installation. You can access them from the Today screen Start Menu->Help->Quikwriting. Or, when you access any help files from the Start Menu you have the option under "View" at the bottom of the screen to see "All Installed Help" which will give you a full list of help files. You can also view an html version.Frequently Asked Questions:
- Q: Does Quikwriting exist for earlier versions of Windows CE?
A: No. - Q: Which processor do I have?
A: On your handheld device go to the Start Menu->Settings->System tab->About.Examples:
Compaq Ipaq->Strongarm
Compaq Aero->Mips
HP Jornada->SH3
Cassio Cassiopeia->Mips - Q: Which version of Windows CE does my device run?
A: On your handheld device go to the Start Menu->Settings->System tab->About. - Q: Where is the CAB file? I can't find it.
A: If you used ActiveSync to copy the file to your device you should be able to find it using File Explorer which you can access from the Start Menu->Programs and click on the icon for the "File Explorer" application. The CAB file should be in the directory called "My Documents."
If you did not use ActiveSync but followed the directions above, you should be able to see the CAB file in the start menu. If it's not there, you may have copied it to another directory and can use File Explorer to find it. - Q: I can't produce any characters, why?
A: Quikwriting works best when your stylus is always in contact with the screen. Especially when you are just beginning, you may be lifting your stylus in order to look for letters. When you lift the stylus off the screen, the stroke you began is cancelled. Try producing letters with one continuous gesture. - Q: Quikwriting used to work but it disappeared, why?
A: If your device runs out of power or is reset for some reason you lose all of the data you have put on the device, including Quikwriting or any applications you have installed. You mustreinstall Quikwriting if your device crashes or runs out of power. - Q: Why can't I see the guide on my Jornada?
A: The new design makes the characters easier to see in the guide. However, on some devices you may need to adjust the contrast (i.e., make it darker). - Q: Why can't I install the new version of Quikwriting? I get an error message saying Quikwriting is already running.
A: If you already have Quikwriting installed on your device and have been running it you will probably run into an error when installing the new version. You will get a message saying that Quikwriting is already running and cannot be overwritten. You must do a soft reset on your device. Enhancements and Bug Fixes for Version 1.0
- New guide design makes characters easier to read.
Shift modes redraw the guide so that only the available characters are shown, allowing for more screen space to clearly display characters. - Improved performance and stability.
- Tab character bug has been fixed.
Bug Fixes Version 0.85
- Character guide no longer appears in option mode
- Shift mode icons no longer conflict
- No more random character generation
There is, however, a problem primarily with the Ipaq and possibly with other devices that seems to be not connected withQuikwriting. The stylus input is sometimes interpreted errratically so that a pen drag or pen down motion seems to be occurring in a diagonal to the right of where the stylus actually is. This problem will produce unexpected characters, usually "n." It also seems to worsen over time. - No more crashing
- No need to wait for the guide to redraw to start producing characters
Please report any problems or bugs to Quikwrite-bugs.
